Whiskey Chaser by Lucy Score with Claire Kingsley

"I'm afraid my vagina might turn itself inside out if you try to give it another orgasm so soon." - Scarlett Bodine

Raised by her three overbearing brothers, Scarlett is a hell-raising tomboy with a tool belt. A tornado stirring up trouble everywhere she goes. Her favorite pastimes? Drinking any man under the table and two-stepping. But she has zero interest in love. Scarlett's only being neighborly when she claims her sexy next-door neighbor as her new pet project.

Devlin is a man at rock bottom. Marriage, political career, five-year plan to Washington, D.C. All destroyed with one well-placed jab. The golden boy is now the black sheep relegated to Bootleg Springs, a tiny West Virginia town with two claims to fame: 1. Moonshine and 2. The cold case disappearance of a teen girl.

Devlin just wants to lick his wounds. But Scarlett has other ideas for his tongue… and the rest of him. She's determined to bring him back to life, even if getting him back on his feet means never seeing him again. But when an old mystery becomes new news, she'll need his help to survive the scandal.

Caroline's Review
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book was brilliant and a fabulous start to a new series!

"She had so much energy. It was hard to remain numb around her."

Scarlett Bodine is a whirlwind made up of a sexy-as-sin body, a heart of gold, good intentions, and positivity in spades. She's the complete opposite of her temporary, reclusive neighbour, but she made a promise to look out for him. The fact that she feels a strong attraction to him is no great surprise since he's gorgeous, and a new face in a small town. She's happy to help him get his mojo back with some added benefits thrown in, however, it doesn't make sense to bank on something long term as they are complete opposites, and he'll be going back to his own life at some point.

"It was like being on a diet and living next door to an ice cream stand."

Devlin McCallister just wants to brood. In peace. His life is a disaster and he's in semi-exile from his family. He's tucked away in a small town where everybody knows everybody else, and nobody locks their doors. When he meets the firecracker next door, he's almost helpless in the face of her lively, vibrant personality, and her determination to drag him back into the land of the living. Not to mention the desire that ignites within him, which catches him completely off guard, as well as the deeper feelings he develops for her. He doesn't see differences between them; he just sees how well they mesh and knows that a life without her in it would be much less colourful.

"I'd never been kissed the way Devlin did it. He kissed me like he had to, like I was air and he needed me to live."

This novel was funny and super sexy, with a fabulous cast of characters, and a stirring mystery thrown in, too.

The chemistry between Scarlett and Devlin was immediate and off the charts! Scarlett was a strong female character. She was so true to herself and down-to-earth. There was no pretense about her. She was a genuine breath of fresh air compared to the artificial, jaded society figures that Devlin was accustomed to. I loved how she brought out the possessive caveman in him. She stripped away his refinement and saw him as a man - not the polished, urbane political figure that he was raised and nurtured to be.

"She made me feel powerful and weak in the same breath. Invincible and desperate."

Devlin was gorgeous, hurting and lost. His time with Scarlett was a revelation to him. I loved how she changed him on a fundamental level, and made him question his goals and his outlook on life. I enjoyed how open he was to the things she wanted to do with him, and how well he began to integrate into Bootleg life. I adored how much he wanted to take care of Scarlett, who is the natural caretaker in her family, and that he was willing to stand up for her.

This story was also a great introduction to Scarlett's friends and family, as well as a mystery that is likely to span some, if not all, of the books to come in this series. I honestly cannot wait to read the next one. Roll on book two!
