Caroline's Review
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Sometimes boring is good. It's in the quiet you hear the heart beat."

Everybody loves the charming, playful Easton Royal. He hates the quiet. He always needs a distraction and, sometimes, those distractions are dangerous. Only his family realise what lurks beneath his happy-go-lucky, flippant facade. Now that his older brother, Reed, has moved on to college, the spotlight falls on Easton to carry the school leadership mantle, but he has no interest in doing so. He's happy for his brother's girlfriend, Ella, to do that. Unfortunately, this state of affairs is not acceptable to everyone at the elite, snobby school.

"There are plenty of girls I can sleep with, but I'm drawn to Hartley in a way I haven't been drawn to another person. There's something about her that makes me happy when I'm with her."

Hartley Wright is trying to keep a low profile. Although she's attracted to Easton, she can't afford to have him in her life. She doesn't need the attention, nor the aggravation of envy and spite that comes from being involved with a Royal. However, he won't get the message. He is incredibly persistent, meddlesome, and blatantly obvious about his interest in her.

"Trouble follows you wherever you go, Easton."

Easton has an addictive personality. He willingly stopped his old vices but took up new vices. Hartley is another new addiction for him. Her presence in his life gives him a high like no other. No matter what she does or says, he can't leave well alone. He needs to understand that his actions cause a reaction, which are often negative and harmful.

This was a fabulous start to Easton's story. For all his wealth, good looks, and charisma, he is a little boy lost. The middle child, he's always felt somehow alone. I feel that he's very much an attention-seeker and always looking for validation. His intentions are good but he's incredibly impulsive and gung-ho in his attitude. To me, he is crying out to be understood. He comes across as shallow but that's because he shies away from deeper feelings. He doesn't understand what he feels for Hartley because he's scared of how she makes him feel, and he refuses to look deeper into himself.

Hartley was a great, strong character, however, she can't avoid being dazzled by the presence that is Easton Royal. When someone showers you with that much attention, it's so hard to turn away from them completely, especially when you feel an attraction to them. She knows he has depth but he rarely shows it. I think she struggles to truly understand him. In the meantime, he continues on with trying to make amends, whilst leaving chaos in his wake, leaving us with a shocking ending.

This novel was angsty and addictive. Cannot wait for the concluding part of Easton and Hartley's story!
